Druids AGM 2001

The Druids 86th AGM was held at St Georges Road on the evening of Friday 7th December.

A well attended meeting heard the minutes of the previous AGM, the review of the season, a statement of the accounts and the election of officers.

Highlights were the call for the resignation of the Treasurer (Mr D Thorley) after he declared a loss for the year approaching £30. He swiftly transferred the blame to Mr M Hope for failing to organise the Annual Dinner Dance, which had in the previous year netted a healthy profit.

Realising that he was about to become the scapegoat for the whole sorry affair, Mr Hope claimed that he was merely a "figurehead". A quick look in the dictionary confirms that Mark is entirely correct in his assessment.

Later, after much fumbling by the Sec., Mr Christopher Clark was officially installed as Captain for the 2002 season. His deputy (Mr Vice Captain) was subsequently announced as Mr Nick Mayhew. Let's hope that a season of quality cricket awaits the Druids in 2002.

Other decisions taken were that a working party would look at either Spain or Portugal for the next Druids overseas tour in 2005. Meanwhile, Bamburgh in the North East, is being investigated as a potential tour for the forthcoming year.

The AGM also took the opportunity, during the absence of Mr S Williams and Mr S Ward from the room, of voting them on to the committee. How their skills are to be utilised is not yet fully understood.

Lastly, a vote of thanks was given to the almighty for the decline in the memory cells of Mr Bill Osborne. His forgetfullness, leading to his unusual absence from the AGM, ensured that the proceedings terminated a full hour ahead of the normal schedule.

Arrivals!

The pitter patter of tiny footsteps are unlikely to be heard in Westbourne Ave. because of the thump, thump footsteps of Mr G. Irvine.

Nevertheless, Garry and Fran are proud to announce the arrival of a healthy 8lb daughter on Wednesday 28th November 2001. Full details of this momentous occasion can be found on the Druids' "Congratulations" page.

Garry has stated that he will post a photograph of himself on the wall of the Coach & Horses in order that fellow Druids do not forget what he looks like.

Latest Golf News!

The Druids 2001 Autumnal Golf Meeting will be held at Scarcroft Golf Club on Friday 5th October. Druids wishing to reserve one of the very limited places available should forward a cheque for £45.00 (made payable to Scarcroft Golf Club) to Stewart McCulloch at his country residence - The Mechanics' Institute, Bishop Monkton.

These sought after places will be allocated on a first to pay basis.

Tee-off time is 9.30am and will be preceeded by breakfast at Slobby and Suzie's house (no.10 Harlow Oval), commencing 7.45am. Don't forget, it is not necessary to play golf in order to attend breakfast, the more the merrier.

An additional prize is being awarded this year in recognition of the fact that the legendary Bernhard Langer tape is easily hidden by the winner. Commencing this Autumn, the Druid with the lowest points score in the morning round will now be awarded an extra trophy (to be unveiled on the day) which must be prominently displayed on the winner's mantlepiece. Druids would be well advised to improve their game.

Committee Announcement!!!

Dear Druid,

It is high time we honoured Ian Black and David Thorley for their services to the club over the last two centuries; a dinner is to be held. Thursday 28th June is the chosen date and the venue will be Harrogate Golf Club. It will be a men-only and Dinner Jacket occasion. Guests will be welcome. The committee would like to make presentations to each of these stalwarts and, so, would like as many Druids as possible to attend. Please consider this a THREE LINE WHIP. Prompt replies to the address below would be appreciated - though such promptness would amaze.

Latest Golf News!

Captain Richard Eaden continues his impressive Millenium Year with victory in the Autumnal meeting at Sandmoor. The "King of Nidderdale & Huge triumphed in the afternoon's Wurtheimer Cup.

Meanwhile - Coach & Horses Jim picked up the Champagne Moment prize along with Bernhard Langer Tape for lowest individual score of the day. For full details (including the inaugural presentation of the Hole In 1 Trophy) see the "Golf Page".

News Flash!!!

In a shock announcement "Rouge" Millet claims that he has experienced difficulty swallowing. A spokesman from one of the many bars in Monaco has replied that this claim is preposterous based upon what he and 10,000 of his countrymen observed during the now legendary events of the Druids Millennium Tour. Updates on the situation can be had on most nights in the front bar of the Coach & Horses from the man himself.

PS Any help with tour stories would be greatly appreciated as I have forgotten everything that happened. In fact not so much forgotten as never really knew. Was I in fact there? - if so I can categorically confirm that I did not inhale! Unless anyone else knows better.

Druids AGM 2000

The Druids AGM 2000 will be held at the Harrogate Cricket Club, St Georges Road on the evening of Friday 1st December. Supper will be served so would all those who wish to attend please inform the secretary at the earliest opportunity.

Golf Spring 2000 "Royal Occasion"

The Spring Meeting held at Bingley St. Ives, somewhat surprisingly, saw the first Druids' Hole In One achieved after 42 years by "The Prince" aka Ralph Zoing on the par 3 18th (unless anyone knows better!).

It didn't take long for the Prince's PR machine to swing into operation as the back page of the Advertiser duly printed the story.

The main event was once again captured by the "King of Nidderdale" down from the hills to plunder his second victory.

The Wurtleheimer Trophy was seized by the heavy-weight combo G Beattie and G Irvine, Gordon having only recently taken up golf and on his first Druids outing - Well done!

Further details, including the historic Hole in One, can be gleaned from the Druids' "Congratulations" page.

The Autumn meeting will be held at Sandmoor Golf Club on 20th October, breakfast at Suzie and Slob's - start 8.00am, total cost for the day - £46.00 (2 rounds of golf, lunch and prizes). Cheques (payable to Druids Golf Society) should be sent to 26 The Oval, Harrogate or given in person to Stewart McCulloch.

Don't forget - tickets are still available for the Druids' Dinner Dance - £26.00 per person, 16th September, 7.30 for 8.00pm at the Majestic Hotel.

PS. John Myers is still going through his Peter Bainbridge phase; will marriage cure him?

The Druids Cricket Club AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Druids Cricket Club was held on Friday the 3rd December in the bar of the Harrogate Cricket Club. The well attended meeting appointed Mr Richard Eaden as Captain for the Millennium year to the approval of all those present. The same approval was accorded to Mr Fraser Irvine on his appointment as Vice Captain.

One major topic of discussion was the tour to Monaco to visit ageing Druid Jimmy Bennett (Veteran of the South of France Tour featuring Hynes, Irvine, Milnes, Booth, Irish & Beattie). The Tour to Monaco has been approved and all those wishing to participate in this venture should send cheques for £75.00 (made payable to Druids CC) to Olly or Simon "Jake the Peg" Corner.

Match managers appointed so far for the year 2000 are: -

May - Rupert Whiting,

June - Garry Irvine,

July - Hugh Thompson.

August - Fraser Irvine

September - Stewart McCulloch

These have yet to be confirmed as 100% accurate

MAJOR NEWS FLASH

Edward "Screaming Lord" Cooke (pictured below in a compromising moment with The Great Man - please submit captions for this picture to Mr S McCulloch as soon as possible) was dramatically snubbed in his bid to join the committee of the Druids. The first ever volunteer in Druids history, he was unanimously voted down by his peers at the meeting to a general sigh of relief from all those present.

Mr Bill Osborne then lead a noisy "Hip Hip Hooray" for the injured (and therefore absent) Simon Corner who has been nursing a severely injured hip. He intends to be back on the "Field of Dreams" (behind the stumps of nightmares) at the earliest opportunity. For further information please contact the Rouge Mullet or Mr Richard Eaden. Until then - Vive la Tour, Allez Pernod!
